Rob Porter
Rob started his wrestling career in Mahomet-Seymour when in 1980 he became the first State Champion for MSJH in IESA wrestling at the 65 lb weight class. He then went on to have one of the most storied wrestling and coaching careers in MSHS history.
Rob was an integral part of two IHSA Class A state championships in 1983 and 1984. He was a team captain on the 1984 team. He was also an individual state champion at the 105 lb weight class in 1984. He placed Third in 1983 at the 98 lb weight class. He was a Illinois Junior Freestyle Champion in 1983 and runner-up in 1984. In 1984 he was selected to the Scholastic Coach Magazine First Team All-American Wrestling Team. Rob’s Varsity record his senior season was 44 and 2. Overall Robs varsity record was 89 victories and 17 losses.
Upon graduation Rob enrolled at Edinboro University, PA. HE was a four year letter winner and was ranked nationally by Amateur Wrestling News at the 126 lbs. During the 1987 season. He qualified for the Division 1 National Championships in 1987 and 1989.
In 1990 Rob returned to MSHS to teach math and become the head wrestling coach. He would remain the head coach until 2001. His team's amassed a win loss record of 254-44-3.
In 1991, 1994,1997 and 2001 his teams placed 3rd in the individual IHSA state Wrestling Tournament. He coached 32 State place winners and 8 individual state champions. He was awarded the USA Wrestling Distinguished coach award in 2001.
Rob left Mahomet and became the Head wrestling Coach at Crook County High School in Prineville, Oregon from 2001-2004. While there he had an overall record of 36 wins and 13 losses. His 2004 team placed 4th in class 4A state.
Rob came Back to Illinois in 2007 and took the head wrestling position at Naperville Central High School from 2007-2015. He had a team win loss record of 114 and 48.
Robs overall head wrestling record was 404 wins 141 losses and 3 ties.
Rob has won numerous national titles during his adult wrestling career topped by his Veterans World Gold Medal in 2010. Rob was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame in 2011.
Currently, Rob lives in Naperville with his wife Dena and Son Tommy. His father (Tom) is a former University of Illinois and IWCOA Hall of Fame Wrestling Coach. His mother (Patty) was a long time teacher and friend to wrestling in the Mahomet-Seymour School District.
